Rivals
You are not the only merchant watching the region. Rivals travel between towns, buy local stock and sell into demand. Their choices can soften an opportunity before you arrive.
Demo rivals
Nessa Quickcart
Nessa is an active road merchant whose movements introduce the rival system. Her purchases and sales can change town supply just as the player's trades do.
House Varrin
House Varrin also operates during the demo. Its map marker uses the initials HV and appears either at a town position or along a route while travelling.
Red Ledger Company
The Red Ledger Company is not part of the current demo. It is reserved for later progression and does not appear on demo rival pages or map markers.
Map markers
Rival disks show current position:
- At a town when the rival is conducting business there
- Along a route while travelling
Two dedicated marker positions exist for each town so both demo rivals can appear without occupying the same space. Rival markers remain visible through travel transitions.
Clicking a marker closes the Map Room and opens the rival's page in the Merchant Notebook.
Recorded business
The notebook describes known activity in short lines, such as:
- Bought goods in Brindleport
- Sold goods in Appleford
- Travelling to Sunmere
These records tell you what happened without exposing the rival's private decision formula.
Rival rumours
Once rivals are unlocked, customers may share rumours about:
- A rival's current town
- A rival who is travelling
- Goods the rival is carrying
- A plan to buy or sell a named good in a named town
Rumours report the useful observation only. They do not append broad personality claims such as “they always chase demand.”
Where rivals travel
Rivals favor towns the player has unlocked, making their activity relevant to current decisions. They can still travel beyond the player's known market, so the region does not feel as though it exists only around the player.
Strategic response
If a rival is heading toward the same shortage, you can:
- Take a faster route
- Choose a different demanded good
- Sell in another town
- Wait for a new shortage
- Buy the rival's activity indirectly by sourcing from the town they enriched
Rivals create pressure, not automatic failure.
