Respect and Unlocks
Respect represents your standing as a useful, trustworthy merchant. It is broader than wealth: earning many coins does not automatically make the region respect you.
Demo levels
| Level | Title | Total XP required | Unlocks |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | Unknown Peddler | 0 | Appleford; Apples, Bread, Eggs and Cheese; basic market and politics information |
| 1 | New Peddler | 5 | Brindleport; Salt and Fish |
| 2 | Market Regular | 20 | Mosswick; Sunmere; Meat and Firewood |
| 3 | Recognized Seller | 40 | Highbridge |
Respect 3 is the final challenge of the demo and triggers Old Marlow's conclusion and the end-of-demo card.
The first market
Completing the first tutorial market raises you to Respect 1. This guarantees that the guided journey can continue to Brindleport even if the first day was not an expert performance.
How later Respect is earned
Respect generally rewards behavior that helps the regional economy, including:
- Running successful market days
- Serving real demand
- Pricing fairly
- Bringing useful goods into shortages
- Making responsible choices
- Showing consistency across several markets
One market has a limit on ordinary Respect rewards, so a single perfect sell-through does not skip the full progression. Special milestones may be awarded separately.
How Respect can be harmed
Behaviors that exploit or damage a town can work against your standing, such as severe price gouging on essential goods, repeatedly ignoring local rules or selling unusable stock.
Not every poor market costs Respect. Sometimes a bad day is simply a financial lesson.
Merchant Standing and the quill
The quill on the stall opens the full Respect ladder. After the first market it pulses during that evening so you can inspect the newly unlocked information. Opening it stops the pulse; ignoring it also clears the pulse the next morning.
The quill is informational and does not block travel.
Respect versus local conditions
Respect is regional progression. It determines broad unlocks. A town's current prices, wealth, shortages and political rules are separate and continue changing regardless of your rank.
